JOEY▪ F ire was hard to make twice. He had his dried meat stored in the cold dryness of the caves but a fire would make things easier on his quality of life. The constant shivers eventually died down though. He stayed far from the light of the mouth of the cave. His eyes had adjusted almost a week ago to the lack of light and cold but he still noticed its constant grip on him. For now though he stayed huddled against the cave wall. He had been taken by a slow rocking. The warped image of his brother didn't follow him into the back of the caves. The darkness drowned him out. The voices he'd created in his head washed away with the echoes of the caves and leaving him by himself. The sounds of rain roaring through the caves also helped to wash away the voices... but nothing could wash the guilt of him surviving. Then it happened. A series of voices broke through to him. Distorted by the echoes of the caves and bringing with them more light then naturally possible with a coming day. Fire of some kind. Curiosity drove him towards the mouth of the cave though he stayed low and to the side. As the first couple people came into sight he felt his chest rising and falling wildly. There were more people here than he would have thought possible. He didn't think he knew this many, did he? How could he see ghosts of people he didn't know? But then he saw the back of his brother's head. He didn't have to have him turn to know who he was. Suddenly his hands were shaking, his eyes wide as discs as he ran further into the cave. This couldn't be happening, right? "WHY DID YOU BRING THEM HERE?" he would scream, knowing his brother wouldn't answer- couldn't answer while he stayed safely in the darkness. His words were a sheik that echoed into a jumble that couldn't be made out at the mouth of the cave. " Just stay dead... just stay dead..." he would repeat the words into the cave floor as he shook wildly. He needed to make sense of things but fear and anger made it impossible to think straight.

Things were coming to a close in the caves. Most people had taken to snoozing in the darkness while the storm raged on. There really wasn't anything else to do besides making small talk, and the fighting with Logan had drained a lot of people of enthusiasm. It was cold despite the one fire they had going, so many were snuggled together with extra clothes draped across themselves as they snored away.
Zach was sulking alone at that moment, nearer to the back of the entrance in darkness, when he heard what sounded like shrieking from somebody. But it wasn't someone close by. It had come from deeper in the caves. He stood up in a bit of fright and was frozen in place. A few moments of silence. Then more shrieking. Thinking on it, he could've sworn everybody had stayed together, closer to the fire. Someone must've wandered off and gotten lost.
No one else really seemed to notice. Someone had told a joke that was apparently really funny and those who were still awake were laughing about it. Zach didn't want anyone else frightened and rushing off to get themselves lost. He'd check it out first and come back for help if he started to get lost, himself. Without saying a word, he walked over and grabbed a small branch from the fire, one that would stay burning and give him some more light. No one questioned him as he stalked off to the caverns where the cries had echoed from.
He was actually scared. Whoever was yelling was probably lost. He'd have to keep careful track so not wind up in their position.
He crept along with the smoldering branch in front of him. It wasn't engulfed in a huge flame so there was still not enough light to see everything. As a secondary source, he pulled out his dying cell phone and switched it on and started to use the glow of that, too.
For the most part, this part of the cave seemed to be a straight shot. Maybe this person wasn't lost. Or they could just be stupid. Zach tried to control his own fear. He had no idea what to expect ahead. But as he kept creeping forward, a voice started to become clearer in the silence. That someone was nearby by. It sounded like a boy. A scared boy. Repeating the same things over and over, but it was hard to hear what. Nervous, sensing something out of the ordinary, Zach called out into the darkness in a normal, inside voice.
"Hey. Who's back in here? Are you alright? Follow my voice and I'll get you back to the others."

JOEY▪ The sound sound of footsteps reached his ears, causing his heart to hammer wildly in his chest. Still he wouldn't move. His body stayed curled to the cave floor as the sound got closer and closer. Then he saw the light. The light meant that the voices would come back. That his brother's ghost would come back. He scrambled away from it, going further into the darkness. It was his brother's voice. He knew it well
"Go away!' he rasped out wildly. "You aren't wanted. Just die... just go! You are dead!"
The words were shrill and panicked. He couldn't handle more torment from them now and he didn't want to be led back to the other ghosts. But his brother seemed adamant on him returning. He picked up a stone, coming out from the darkness and taking his opportunity to hurl it at the apparition. Sometimes this worked to make it leave him alone for a while. He threw it as hard as he could, hoping to scare the ghost away.

Whoever this was, things were getting creepy, and Zach was too tired to be anything more than irritated at this point. He didn't understand who was here or how it made sense that they'd prefer the dark depths of this place to the fire back in the entrance. And those words he was speaking... What did that actually mean?
The voice was definitely a young kid's. In fact, the more he thought about it, the more the voice reminded him of Joey. He sighed, knowing Joey was long gone, and this person seemed nothing like Joey. He wouldn't say such crazy things. He hadn't lost his mind.
Zach could see the shadow of the kid now, and a faint flicker of light revealed some of his features, casting a glow in his eyes. At that same moment the shadow appeared, Zachary was pegged by something flung in his direction. It hit his right collar bone with a sickening crunch.
"AHH! God....Damn," he moaned in pain. The stick and his cell phone both fell to the cave floor. The cell phone shattered on impact. THe pain was intense, but his anger was blazing now like it had with the appearance of Logan. He clutched at his new bruise and grit his teeth, while his other hand quickly reached out at full length into the air. He dove in where he last saw the shadow and hoped to catch the kid before he could slip away.
"You sunuva bitch," he yelled, feeling more feral than he'd ever felt before. Someone would die tonight.

JOEY▪ TAG ▪ NOTES S The sound of a crunch brought a flurry of conflicting emotions running through him. First there was the anger that his brother was still there. That look of anger matched perfectly in the echoed features only brothers could share. He wanted him to go away. To leave and never come back and let him live the rest of his miserable existence on this island alone until he forgot what it was like to remember having a home. He didn't want the constant reminder of his family looming in his conscious mind. But then there was another feeling.. this being 'how'? Ghosts didn't get hit with rocks. It wasn't possible. They weren't solid, right?
This impossibility gave way through the anger as Zach dove for him. He was too shocked to step out of the way in time and instead found himself being dragged down. His head bounced off the rock as he landed, disorienting him further. He would flip himself over, trying to pull away from this strange creature. This ghost with a face like his brother who could grab him like the monster he had killed.
"Let go!" he screamed out, his limbs flailing in no disagreeable pattern as he did everything he could to get to the safety of the darkness. His fingers dug into the cave of the floor, trying to pull his way to freedom. His fingernails grinding uselessly against the rough stone as he gave another frightened scream and gave up that attempt. He turned on the ghost, trying to beat it weakly with his fists so he could break free in his blind panic. "Go! LET GO! Free! Let me go! Be dead! Just be dead!"

Zach's fingers made contact with the fabric of the kids shirt and immediately he pulled them both down. Normally he might think his way through this kind of thing, but emotions were already high. So much had happened in the last twenty four hours alone.
He pinned the stranger down with his own body weight, grunting against the struggling. He was ready to slam the kid's head against the rock, but the assaulter had slithered his way around and started to use his fists. Zach tried to keep his head away and use his own arms to block each blow. The screaming continued and Zach felt a sudden rush of confusion as the voice seemed to register again in his head as Joey's.
"I'm not dead! What are you talking about? Who the hell are you?!" he demanded, trying to grab hold of his arms in a squeeze. "I'm trying to help you, SO CUT IT OUT!"

JOEY▪ TAG ▪ NOTES P inned down, Joey found the little energy he had draining with the strain of his struggling. The thing above him screamed and he shrunk back to the stone. His hands still pressed against this monster above him, trying to keep them apart. His chest heaving as he laid there. "You are dead," he whimpered, mostly to himself, over and over again. "You died... you are dead... Zach... you died.. leave me alone... you're dead.." Slowly the words would register, if only slightly. He would still beneath his attacker, panic still in his eyes. He was almost unrecognizable from the boy who had been on the plane. A mixture of dirt and blood coated him and his lack of a shower of even attempt at cleaning made his hair greasy and wild. His clothes were ragged and discolored. The darkness around them and harsh shadows would help with this.

The struggles died down, and some of his own adrenaline sent with it. The terror of the moment seemed over now as the kid just kept him at arms length and whimpered nonsense. Zach, breathing heavy, listened in silence and stared down. The fire of the stick combined with traces of the sunlight leaking through the corridor behind them was just enough to cast more light on his features. At the same moment his name was said, Zach seemed to realize who it was he was holding down.
Frightened at first, Zach leapt away from Joey so fast it was as though he had touched something burning. He backed away, crawling backwards, until he knocked his head on the walls in back of him.
This couldn't be happening. He had officially lost his damn mind. Or had he? Zach hadn't ever found a body.
"Joey...?" he called back, gently, quietly, as his body began to tremble. "Are you really Joey?"
As if he still wasn't sure, he fumbled around for his stick and pointed it in Joey's direction. The deep orange glow testified to the truth. Zach, wide-eyed, felt all the terrible sorrows welling forth that he'd kept buried for a week now. His eyes began to overflow and still he was rooted to his spot, waiting for this boy to say that he was somebody else.

JOEY▪ TAG ▪ NOTES T his different version of the ghost was terrifying. He couldn't fight him off. This realization caused him to deflate, the fight seeming to leave him as he accepted what he assumed would be death soon. He guessed it was payback for leaving his brother to die. Only death didn't come. In fact, the monster ghost leaped away from him, granting him his freedom. He would take the opportunity to back away, glancing at the darkness of the caves and wondering if he could escape. He decided to take his chances. But by the time he got to his feet his own name was spoken. He was left in a half-crouch as he thought this over. His ghosts didn't use names. Their faces were warped. They couldn't touch things. He turned back to his brother's image, staying away from the light of the fire as he practically crawled to him. His entire body was tense as if waiting for the thing to change his mind and attack him again. Inch by painful inch he would slowly go towards him, his hand outstretched despite every fiber of his being screaming at him to run while he had the chance. He saw the tears in his eyes- the emotion that wasn't disgust or hate that he saw daily in the ghosts of his mind. Then his fingertips brushed his shoulder. Just barely at first but it was still physical contact. His other hand touched his brother's face and that was when he seemed to break. His throat caught, burning wildly as if everything was finally starting to make sense to him. "Z-Zach," he stammered, tears spilling over as he moved to hug his older brother. He was crying so hard now that only airy choking sobs left him. He was waiting for the moment when he usually woke up. This wasn't an uncommon dream... or at least finding his brother alive. So he would hold onto him for dear life, refusing to give in to consciousness. "Don't go- I lied- I'm sorry. Please, don't go away. I won't leave again I promise. Don't die again... please.." As the anxiety hit he started to become incoherent, not used to staying asleep this long.

Zach was rooted in place and what was seconds felt like much longer as Joey seemed to awaken to reality, too. They stared at each other in silence like each one was coming to terms with what felt like a dream. Zach's tears didn't start to overflow until Joey touched his shoulder. After that, his little brother touched his face, and Zach's hand snatched at it as Joey said his name and began to sob. His arms pulled the little body into a tight hug while the sadness turned into elation.
The little guy had made it! Zach had done all that searching and crying the first day and Joey had been out here all along. It was too good to be true. Nothing else mattered now that he and Joey were reunited, and Zach buried his face into his brothers shirt and they wept together.
"I'm not dead. I promise," he told him in a voice full of emotion, feeling more alive than ever, more like his old self. There wasn't anything to be angry about now. Not even a huge bottle of vodka would be better than this moment. Not even a rescue. "Everything is alright. I can't believe you're alive. I couldn't find you. I thought I'd find your body and I..."
The awful fear that day, searching through the wreckage, passing by dying people in his haste to take care of Joey first, all of it was fresh again. It was hours after the crash that hope had faded and Zach screamed his pain to the sky. After that, he'd let himself grow numb and started working with tenacity at getting everyone away from that place. Zach let his brother cry and he let himself continue, too. Soon he'd have to bring him back to the warm fire and get him food. Make sure he didn't have any bad wounds.
He thought about the things he was saying and the way he'd acted just before. He didn't seem well. It worried him to no end. Had he hit his head? Was he dying of hunger? Terrified of losing him right after he was found, Zach pushed him gently away so he could look at his face. "Are you hurt?"

JOEY▪ TAG ▪ NOTES S oon Joey's cries would turn to soundless sobs as he just held his big brother. Back at home this level of breakdown would never have been allowed to pass through his attempted 'tough guy' facade. Being but a boy though he had never experienced a trauma such as this. Slowly his mind would begin to wrap around the things he'd done. The voices of his brother's ghost changing to his own conscious thought as he understood, to some degree, what had happened. It was like coming out of a fog. Could he tell his brother? No... he couldn't. This seemed to only feed into the voices echoing inside him. They were a continuous reminder of the horrible thing he'd done to feed himself.
"You weren't in your seat," he said. "I thought you ended up... up like.." he didn't remember her name. The sad fact was that she was trivial compared to everything that had happened. Her face though burned into his mind as he remembered thinking of Zach in her place. The start of when he started seeing his brother happening at that very moment. He took in a few shaky breaths as Zach asked if he was okay.
The monkey bite was the first thing that came to his mind. He lifted up his fore arm slowly, removing the dirty shirt he had been using as a bandage. It was red and puffy but seemed to be scabbing over slowly. Fortunately it hadn't been a very deep wound. His hands held a few small cuts and bruises as well as his knees and arms from the usual wear and tear of surviving on ones own for a few weeks. The only other significant wound was a gash across his temple from the crash. It had started to heal as well thankfully but was still an angry red. "It only hurts if I touch it.." he said about the bite mark. "Are... are you hurt?"

Zach felt dizzy. The lack of proper food and water may have contributed. Or it could've been how mind-blown he felt. Joey really had no idea, no idea, how much he had been suffering over his supposed death. Then, he suddenly appears. Chanting weird things, throwing rocks at him. What happened to Joey? Zach reminded himself that his brother didn't seem right in the head. He had just been thinking things like that before their identities were revealed.
"I'm fine," he snapped in a hurried manner, as he grabbed one of his brothers arms to gently look it over. It was no use, there wasn't enough light to see everything clearly. He suddenly felt frustrated instead of happy. "Why didn't you come find me? I looked everywhere for you. I went crazy trying to find you. There's a whole group of us trying to survive out there! How did we miss you?"
Leftover tears trickled down a cheek as he stood up, body trembling with too much emotional stimulation. His withdrawal was always there, in the back of his mind, but suddenly it threatened to overpower him as he tried to decompress from the overload of feelings. He took a deep breath and tried his hardest to control his outbursts. He couldn't even describe to himself what he was feeling. But he didn't want to scare Joey any more than need be. Just be happy.
"You must've had a rough time by yourself. You must be starving. Have you eaten lately?"
Briefly he realized he sounded like a frantic mother. That in itself was an amusing thought that helped distract him from himself. His hand still held onto his arm as though he could lose the guy again if he were to let go.

JOEY▪ TAG ▪ NOTES T he time bomb was wound tightly in his mind, ticking away at the seconds before his next outburst. The conversation with his brother seemed to drag him back each time though, resetting the counter to help him cope with the reality burning in the back of his mind. "I hid," he said, his voice still wavering as he remembered waking up in the crash. The dizziness that had met him from the hit to the head. It had been a serious concussion but he wouldn't have known that. Finding the girl he'd been flirting with and picturing his brother ending the same way had been enough to make him flee. "I thought... I thought you were ghosts... thats what he told me.... he you... you..." it was very confusing. The fact was that the thing he'd conjured up wasn't his brother. HIs brother was alive. He was sitting holding him and crying It was version of himself-warped and angry from grief- projected to help him cope. In reality though it had simply been his own twisted survival instinct giving him the excuse he needed to stay alive. Telling him to kill... and eat... the time bomb went off when Zach mentioned food. "No... nono! No!" he started to pull away, putting his hands over his ears as if to block out Zach's voice. "You know I did... you told me to. You told me to do it... you know- don't pretend you don't... but... but..." he was shaking again, his eyes squeezed tight as he remembered tearing chunks out of the monster- the human being that he then cooked and stored only a hundred or so feet from in in a cold hole in the wall of the cave. But it wasn't Zach who told him to do these things. He had simply done them. Zach would hate him. He wrenched his arm away, inching back as he sat there shaking.

Joey seem bad off as he tried to explain to Zach more about what happened to him. He wondered how much he had seen when he deserted the crash site. Enough to change him. Just like everyone else had seen enough to feel changed, too. No one would ever be the same person after all this, would they? So, why did Zach feel uneasy with the changes in Joey?
"Ghosts?" he repeated, not completely following the conversation. Zach just filled in the blanks himself. He may have seen Zach and the others before, but he was so frightened that he couldn't compute reality as real. But...Joey then mentioned more jumbled thoughts about being told by someone that everyone was ghosts. Zach's eyes never left Joey's face, but suddenly he wondered if someone else was here to. There was an eerie feeling in the air that made his skin crawl.
Then, Joey started his shrieking as he pulled away from his grip. Confused, Zach watched the scene unfold in silence. It was not possible for him to follow any train of thought. As it went further on, his blood ran cold and his heart sank. It was clear now that something serious had happened to Joey, and the reason why nobody could find him was because he'd completely lost it. Or...no, maybe he was just hallucinating. Maybe he needed food and water, that's all. Zach could fix that. But first, he had to calm Joey down enough to make him come with him to the cave entrance.
"Calm down. It's okay, Joey. Calm down. Calm down. There's nobody else here but you and me. What is it I should know? What is it I told you?"
He stood up from the place he'd been sitting and took a tentative step towards him. He seemed terrified, and frankly, Zach was getting there himself. When he didn't understand a situation, he got easily frustrated. Usually, it wasn't like that.
"I'm not pretending anything. I don't know what you're trying to tell me," he said, crouching down again closer in front of him.

JOEY▪ T he constant battle waged in his mind. Reality was in question and each side of him fought fiercely for the truth. His brother seemed only to rile up his reasonings to things, reminding him that he had done everything on his own. He had murdered and eaten something- someone... a person. He couldn't tell his brother that. The voices reminded him that. So he would recoil as it was brought up, dropping to his knees and shaking his head. It was an allowance of time for his brother to come back to him now. A decision had been made within him. He didn't want to go back to the caves. If he did his brother might be gone again. For all he knew this was just another dream and if he didn't stay near Zach then his brother would be dead again... and Joey would be alone. Whether this was his brother or not he didn't want to be alone. "You..." he started, shaking his head. The image of himself stood over his brother now, a wicked grin on his twin's face as he shook his head. Zach couldn't know what he did. "Didn't tell me anything.." he finished finally. He would take in slow shaky breaths now, knowing full and well that he needed to calm himself down. " I'm cold," he would say, hoping to distract his brother from the previous questions. He couldn't live in solitude anymore. He would have to face the truth and infiltrate the group and pretend to be like them so he could be near his brother. "Can I go with you?"
