Amber Fleming
Amber sat between a tree and so many jungle ferns that she could not see past them, waiting for her brother to return from hunting and gathering. It was such a tight space tat her back was straight against the trunk of the tree and her belly rubbed against the ferns. She hated it when he left her alone with just Horsie. She was glad that she at least she had Horsie to comfort her and make it less scary, but Horsie did not provide as much security as Jackson did. Her belly was so big around that it was hard to clutch Horsie to her chest, where he was the most comforting, so she settled for setting Horsie on her lap and holding him there. She hoped that Jackson would be back soon, even though she knew that he was just getting food and providing for her like the good young man that he was.
She thought of Jackson as a man but she still thought of herself as a little girl. According to him, boys became men when they lost their virginity but the little girls who they lose their virginity too were still little girls, which made her wondered what turned girls into woman. She had asked her brother and he had told her that he would tell her when the time came, if it ever did. He had claimed that it was unlikely that she would ever become a woman, but that had been before she became pregnant. She wondered if having the baby would make her a woman but she did not dare to ask because she feared that the answer would end up being yes, but if it was then she hoped that he would have told her by now. She did not want to be a woman because the only woman who she knew, who represented all woman to her, was her mother.
She unknowing moved her hand to Horsie's head and made him turn it, touching his muzzle to some of the ferns. She imagined him eating it, which made her feel a bit more comfortable. He told her that they were good, with his mouthful, and she smiled slightly. Being a stuffed horse, he did not have to eat but, being magically real, he could if he wanted to. He dug his nose deeper into the ferns, clearing a small opening. Amber did not notice for a few seconds. When she did, she quickly pulled Horsie away, causing the ferns to sway from the movement.

Zachary was like a shell of himself. The day of the plane crash, when he couldn't find his younger brother and had thought him for dead, Zach thought life was over. How could he go on living through something that crazy? He'd acted like a madman as if he could fight Death itself. Barking orders, saving lives, taking charge of people's survival - why did he do all of that? He asked himself that now as he traversed the thick foliage of the island jungles. After all, Zach believed more than anyone else that they were as good as dead.
F-ing hyprocrite, his mind screamed at him.
He'd started to actually believe things were getting better. Suddenly he had a woman in his life. His brother, Joey, had been rescued. They had more food, an acceptable place to sleep, and healthy numbers. That was before people started dropping like flies with sickness, and before Lori turned her back on him. He was abruptly reminded how vulnerable and hopeless everyone really was. He was an angry madman again.
There was no purpose to why he was wandering, drenched in sweat under his bedraggled green shirt and dark jeans. He needed to blow off steam and he suddenly didn't have Lori to "tumble around with." He did make visits to his secret bunker of alcohol, though. He was just on the brink of tipsy now as he sloshed down a bottle of aged red wine. He carried it in his left hand.
Something in his line of vision made him stop in his tracks and pay attention to his surroundings. He was walking right by a person. As he turned to his left and peered through the ferns, he saw that it was woman - a very pregnant woman. He didn't know of any pregnant woman and Zach hastily made his way close, not caring how loud he was as he slipped past thick plants.
When he was in clear view, standing in front of her, his eyes widened. Shit, that wasn't a woman. It was a little girl. His dark eyes shot down to her stomach and of course his mind was racing, thinking, trying to interpret what was, to him, a disturbing sight. He did not know this girl and he was scared someone here had hurt her.
No, that couldn't be possible. She was noticeably pregnant and that didn't happen in six or seven weeks, right? He stood there above her, several feet away, and wasn't sure where to begin. The usual fire in him was burned out.
"Who are you?" he demanded of her, not even trying to be the heroic icon. There was no point, anyway. Everyone here was doomed and he had been letting himself forget that lately.

Amber had seen a person, when she looked out of the ferns and she was almost sure of that, and she desperately hoped that that person had not seen her. Amber's arms automatically tried to pull Horsie to her chest, but they ran into her belly, which led the tears to start coming. She pulped Horsie onto her lap and gripped him hard. She heard the rustling of the ferns and she feared that that person was coming for her. Her breathing got faster and faster, until the person stood before her and she looked up at the man, with a look of absolute terror on her face. She had no idea who this man was or what he wanted with her, but she suspected that it was something bad because her brother had always taught her to fear strangers.
The man asked Amber who she was and his tone sounded harsh to her, so her tears began coming faster and her body began to tremble. She could not tell him who she was, or say anything to him. She could not even ask him who he was and what he wanted with her, even though she really wanted to know. She couldn't, because she was not allowed. Her brother had not punished her since the plane crash but she would not break his rules because she respected him and she was sure that this rule had been designed to keep her safe. The rule would be hard to break because the same rule had been placed on her, by Jackson, in their home town and she could not recall ever talking to anyone outside of her family and she was not going to start now.
Jackson had never told her what to do if she encountered a stranger while alone, but just that she had to avoid them. She had not walked without help in a long time and she didn't know if she could do it, or if she could get up from the ground. If she could, she did not think that that would matter much because she certainly could not run. She looked to her left, which was the direction that her brother had gone. "Jackson," she cried, "help!" She didn't know if he would still be in that direction or how far away that he was but she desperately hoped that he could hear her.

Zach continued to tower nearby, waiting patiently for an answer he couldn't help but have a curiousity for, despite his mental state. The two people seemed to be studying each other, lost in their own thoughts. The girl seemed nervous, too nervous, and Zach's brows furrowed with suspicion. How old was she? Was she alone? How in the world was she alive out here? How come nobody had found her, yet?
Her outburst, after an episode of trembling and tears, answered a few questions. Jackson was not a name he knew and he instantly went on alert, scanning their surroundings for the person behind the name. Zach always knew people could never be trusted; especially hungry, desperate people that had survived hellfire on a crashed plane.
Nobody had arrived to rescue her yet, and Zach tried to hush her and keep control of the situation. At least he had grown up with a younger sibling, so he kind of knew kids well enough. Not a girl, though.
"Hey, calm down. I'm not that ugly," he said, a little less gruff that before, but full of Zach's usual biting sarcasm. He looked over and saw a rotting tree stump, and moved over a bit to his right and sat on it, looking casual.
"I'm Zach. I live with the other survivors. Do you live out here? I don't think I've seen you before and I've never heard of Jackson."
Okay, maybe this would be a good distraction from his own personal agony. The shredding pain in his chest was pushed to the side, so he could address this situation. Zach was a lord of justice, a protector of the weak, a sword for those who lost their courage. If he could figure out how old she was, and what her story was behind the belly, Zach would take responsibilities under his wing. If she was raped, someone would die today. That was decided the moment he eyed her plush horse, which she clung to in a way a five year old would.

Amber Fleming
Amber shook her head when he basically called himself ugly. She failed to see the joking side of his words and just thought that he was being serious. She did not think that he was ugly, but she did think that he was terrifying, like all strangers were. If he were ugly, that certainly would not be anything to get so upset about. She also didn't understand why he told her to calm down. She tried to calm down when Jackson told her too but this was a stranger who she probably could not trust so she would not try to calm down for him.
When the man sat on a tree stump near her, she tensed up even more. Between fast heavy breaths, she called out once more. "Jackson. Help! Stranger. Jackson!"
Amber was surprised when the man introduced himself and even more surprised when he told her that he lived with the other survivors. She wondered how many other survivors he meant. She knew that there were other survivors, of course, but she had thought that they lived in small groups of family and close friends, like she did.
She wondered what this Zach person meant when he asked her if she lived out here, but she was not sure so she didn't answer. She did not live out here in this exact same spot, or any exact spot because Amber, Jackson and Horsie did not have an exact living spot. They would cook their meals in the same spot, because it was already set up for that, until it got destroyed and Jackson would pick a new place to build a fire. They had slept, curled up together, in multiple different spots, which were dependent on weather and where Jackson felt like sleeping that night and on wherever they happened to be at the time. She had waited or him, while he went hunting and gathering, in whatever spot he put her that day and they had hung out, telling stories and playing little games, wherever they happened to be at the time.
Jackson Fleming Jackson was frustrated. He had not yet found or killed anything, although he had just come close to killing a bird. It was important to him to keep on playing the role of the big strong man and provide for his little girl and the new baby. It was too late for him to abort the baby now and he had feared that he might do permanent damage to her body, if he tried to do that, in the first place. He kind of wished that the pressure of the plane crash had caused a miscarriage but he was also kind of glad that it hadn’t because he assumed that that would have decreased her chances of survival.
Back when Amber had first became pregnant, Jackson was very worried that Amber would end of dying in childbirth or even before then but his mother had told him that it is very natural and, many years ago, girls Amber’s age used to have babies all the time. Mrs. Fleming had supposedly given birth with nothing but painkillers, which Amber would not have even if they would back home, so she was sure that Amber would be fine. Jackson tried to believe her, but he was still worried about and he knew that his mother had not been thirteen and closer to the size of an eight year old. Still, he enjoyed helping Amber get around and watching the pregnancy make her miserable and he would love for her to have the baby if he could know that she would survive. He was not completely sure what he was going to do after the baby was born, but he was probably just going to put Amber completely in charge of caring for the baby, whether she wanted to be or not, and would only make any suggestions that he could come up with.
He was distracted by his thoughts when he heard his little sister calling for him. Fear in his heart, he rushed to the scene. He was not surprised to see Amber terrified and freaking out, but he was surprised to see the man. “Who are you? What do you want with my baby sister?” he demanded, harshly. He feared that he already knew what the man wanted and Jack had thought about it a lot but he still was not sure how he should explain Amber’s condition to other people on the island, which is why he was trying to keep her hidden.

The girl wasn't responsive. Zachary somehow wasn't surprised. Hell, he wasn't too far off from her state. He may go bat-shit crazy, too. They all would, even the healthy ones, when they finally realized they were stuck here forever and would die awful deaths. Disease, hunger, violence - there were no hospitals or cops to stop any of it.
His mind was hazy; he was losing his focus. This girl was a problem and whoever Jackson was, he was sure to be here shortly. Zach certainly wouldn't have left a little girl by herself in the woods. You can't trust anyone and she was so vulnerable as she was.
His eyes swept across the foliage once again as the girl shrieked in an annoying voice. It was grinding on his patience. He'd tried to be civil, tried to be understanding. She wanted nothing to do with it. Maybe she'd learned the hard way about the truth, not being able to trust anyone no matter how much you liked them. He was surprised when the leaves and bushes parted way with the Jackson in question, a boy who wasn't much older than Joey, Zach's younger brother. Of course, he was upset to see Zachary there in the presence of the princess. He rolled his eyes and sighed, not hiding any of his irritation. He wasn't going to defend himself to a couple of frightened kids.
"I want to know why she's out here by herself. What's wrong with you? You can't take care of her properly out in the middle of the jungle," he countered immediately, standing up to face Jackson. He kept his muscles braced for some kind of funny attack the kid might try to pull.
Assumptions were that this kid was her brother. Zach wasn't too interested. But, he did want to see them come back to the group, where they could live easier. Not even irritated Zach was that heartless. He sighed again, but this time it was different. His demeanor changed back to the tired, indifferent Zach, not the irritable one.
"I tried to introduce myself, but your sister was scared of me and I don't blame her. You can't run around like a wild animal with her...in that condition," he stated matter-of-factly, glancing sidelong at Amber.

Amber Fleming
Amber heard the sound of somebody coming at a past face and she desperately hoped that it was her brother. Despite his anger, Amber felt relived when she heard his voice. She looked up at him and the tears stopped falling from her eyes, although she made no move to wipe them away. She knew that he would come to protect her and he had. She had always believed that she was very lucky to have such a protective and loving older brother, who she loved as much as he loved her and she felt just as lucky to have a magical stuffed horse who was alive but only to her. She knew that she did not deserve either of them, but somehow she had them.
Amber thought that Jackson was being a little hard on Zach, not that there was any chance that she might say anything about it. For a stranger, he had seemed kind of nice. Before Jackson showed up, she had been beginning to feel the urge to say something to him. She might not have, as that was against the rules, but there was no way to know now and she certainly had no urge to do so now.
Jackson Fleming Jackson was taken aback when the man yelled at him. He was not sure how to responded and he wished that he had conducted himself better. Although maybe not, because he had just been worried about his little sister and he could see no harm in being protective over ones family, even if that family member needs protection against you. He hated being yelled at, but he would never dare to cry in front of his Amber.
Jackson began to raise his fist but then put it back down. He feared that he would lose in a fight with this man and he was not going to risk getting in a fight that he might not win, in front of his Amber. He stared at for him seconds, not responding.
The man spoke again. He seemed nicer and calmer now, although that was not going to make Jackson come close to trusting him. His words gave Jackson the need to defend himself. "I was trying to get something for us to eat," he told him. "There's no way to take care of her properly here, so I'm doing the best that I can." Jackson knew that his words were not completely true. He knew that there was a big group of survivors and that Amber would likely be better off with them, but he wanted to keep her to himself so that he could be the predator that he was.
He hoped that he would not pursue the topic of Amber's condition, although he suspected that he would. The best explanation that Jackson had come up with was that their mother had prostituted Amber, which came with the fear of being accused of not protecting his sister. That might at least help to explain her behavior, along with being stranded on the island. The lie of her being brain damaged worked fine with occasionally seen neighbors, although they sometimes seemed a little suspicious, and Jackson feared that anyone they ran into here would take more notice.
