Four sticks. A ragged tarp. The stone she had sharpened and shaped into a spear. The empty coconut she had been using as a cup. That was all she had, but it meant the difference between life and death here. Her body had been in survival mode ever since she had regained consciousness a few weeks back. She knew that she had to keep going for the sake of her unborn child. She wasn't quite sure how she was going to survive on this island for possibly the rest of her life, but she knew that giving up was not an option. She packed all of her belongings up, strapping them to her back. She placed the small, sharp stone in her pocket for easy access in case something came after her in the jungle. She had been in the jungle for about three weeks now, searching for people, for any sign that she wasn't alone. As she walked, she recited scripture or prayed. She knew that if anyone could get her through this insane nightmare, it was God.
She made her way through the forest, trying not to use all of her strength up in the beginning of her journey. She was beginning to give up all of her hope, all of her faith. She had no more water, and she had no way of finding water unless she just stumbled upon it. She wasn't sure she could catch food for at least one meal today, let alone three. She wasn't sure if a wild animal would attack her on her walk through the jungle. There were so many unknowns, and they were starting to break her. They were eating away at all of her joy, all of her soul. As she walked, she tripped over a rock, catching herself on her hands. She stayed on all fours for a good two minutes before gathering the strength and will to get up and keep going.
She continued on for a few hours before she heard something. She stopped in her tracks to listen. What she heard was water, streaming water. Her heart began to race as she walked faster and faster toward the source of the sound. She pushed passed branches and didn't stop with every thorn that ripped at her flesh. She stumbled into a clearing, seeing a huge waterfall and soft grass to lay down in. Was this real? Was she just going mad after being alone for so long? She stepped toward the water, carefully sitting down on her knees. She reached for the water, feeling the cool liquid in her hand. Tears streamed down her face as she pulled the empty coconut shell from her make-shift backpack, filling it, and gulping down water. Once her thirst was satisfied, she cupped some water in her hands, scrubbing at her face. She cleaned up the blood on her arms and legs from her fall and various other scrapes.
Once she was done with the excitement of finding water, she carried her stuff over to a large rock near the pond of water that the waterfall fell into. She put her stuff next to her, using the rock as a back support as she sat on the cool, soft grass. For a few minutes, she twisted pieces of grass around her fingers before putting her head against the smooth rock. It had taken her three weeks to get to this point, and she wasn't sure if she felt relief or sadness. Water was great, there was no doubt, but she craved human interaction. She just wanted to know that someone else was here with her. She placed a hand on her swollen stomach, closing her eyes as she repeated a prayer of strength and weakness.
"Thank you, Lord, for being there for me and allowing me to cry out to you in my times of need. It is amazing to me that the Lord of the Universe would take time to listen to me and to care about what I say. God, there are things happening around me right now that I do not understand. Some of these things make me feel weak, helpless and afraid. Even in the midst of this, I know that you are the Lord. I know that the situation is in Your hand, and I trust You. I beseech you for strength and for wisdom that I would be able to endure this situation and be able to handle it in a way that would bring glory to Your name.
In Jesus name. Amen."
She said aloud before drifting off to sleep.

#Leo |
Leo had been feeling much better as of late. The sun shining on his skin was a constant reminder to keep striving to be better, to keep going on. His leg still ached terribly, but looking down at the stump made him laugh now instead of cry. Lord had he been through a whirl-wind on this island. He had been walking more and more each day, relying heavily on the crutches and the make-shift cane that he and his nurse had made together. He was slowly transitioning from two crutches to one, and then only the cane when getting around the caves. People were beginning to notice him more, notice his recovery. He couldn't help but also see that he was inspiring some of the sick. He was one to know that people only needed a little hope, and he was more than happy to be that light for them.
Leo had gotten his freckled butt up to go to the lagoon today. This old man wasn't about to let his leg stop him from seeing this amazing sight that everyone around the caves talked about. Those that had listened to his bible lessons in the evenings had told him stories about how the lagoon had almost been a religious experience for them. It had been the moment to show them that God was still on their side. If that wasn't inspiring, Leo didn't know what was. He had made it a goal of his to see this lagoon and feel its cool waters on his sweaty skin.
And boy, was he sweaty. The island did not care that he had an old man's gut. It did not care that he couldn't standing the humidity. His body was sweating profusely, a mixture of the environment and the fact that he was still getting used to the crutch that was digging into his armpit. He looked a mess, wobbling through the underbrush like a brand new baby deer. His crutch tangled in vines, causing him to grunt as he tugged it out. In the meantime, he fell, tugging the crutch out of the hold of the vines. Landing straight on his butt with a grunt, the old man looked up at the tree canopy, dark eyes wrinkled in defeat.
"Now God, I thought we were friends. You're really testing me today, Buddy," he said softly, talking to him as if the two were best of friends. He groaned, lifting himself up. Leo held his chest, winded from all the physical exertion. "This better be one damn good waterfall, God," he said with a hearty chuckle, making his way onwards towards the lagoon.
It hadn't been too much longer, maybe 20 more minutes, and Leo found himself in the lagoon. His breath was swept away at the beauty, and the cold water looked so welcoming to his sweat-soaked body. He hobbled over, ready to sink into the water when he noticed he wasn't alone. His eyes swept over to the young lady and he widened them. He had never seen her before, and he had seen everyone. Spending most of your time being taken care of would give you the opportunity to know everyone. "Miss?" he asked, stumbling his way closer to her. She looked so ragged, much worse than he imagined that he looked right now. And a quick look at her made him wonder if she was pregnant. No one living on the island for 3 weeks would have a bump like that. He had even lost much of his gut being here. There was no room for overeating.
"Are you okay?" he asked as he stood near her, his shadow falling over her face.
In Him we shall trust |

Life had a funny way of giving you what you wanted. All her life, Flo had wanted to have a family. She wanted a big one. She wanted lots of tiny feet patter waking her up in the morning. She wanted the baby snuggles and the ‘I need my mom’ moments. You would think that growing up, raising four of your younger siblings would have put her off from wanting kids, but it only made her want and need stronger. Luis knew that she wanted a big family, and he expressed that he would love to have at least five children. So, while she waited for her dream of starting a family to come true, she was a nanny to some of the other wealthy couples in town. Luis had a fantastic job, and he didn’t want Flo to have to work. Flo, though, had a mind of her own. She didn’t want to sit around the house all day or just shop all day. She wanted to get out and make her own money. It made her feel like she was worth something.
So, when she found out she was pregnant, she felt as if everything in her life was coming into place. It had taken a few years of trying, but it finally happened. She couldn’t wait to tell Luis that they were going to become parents in about nine short months. She had already had so many ideas pass through her head that she was going to have a boy first. She had flashes of the nursery float through her head, and she had even seen her rocking the little baby, who, in her vision, had been bundled up in a quilted blanket her mother had made once she found out she was going to be a grandmother. Of course, she had just found out she was pregnant three minutes before those thoughts popped into head, and they weren’t actually happening. But she was excited for motherhood.
She had planned on pulling a Full House thing. When Becky found out she was pregnant on Full House, she had made baby based foods, such as baby corn, baby back ribs, etc. Flo had gone home to cook for her husband, but that’s when she had her dreams of having a big family crushed. Luis was torturing some poor woman in order to get her husband to cooperate in telling him information. She had also found out that it was his job to do such things. Flo was a kind woman, and she could never harm a fly. So this was an extreme deal breaker. She fled that night, only to miss her husband and return to Chile. Sadly, fate had a decided to intervene, and she had been stranded here. She knew she would probably never see Luis again, and she felt that this was God’s way of telling her that what she was doing was a mistake. She also knew that God knew she was stubborn and strong-willed, and the only way she would stay away from Luis was if she had been stranded on an island and literally could not physically get to him.
When Flo heard another human’s voice, her eyes snapped open. She had not been expecting to hear another voice. At first, she didn’t believe what she was seeing in front of her: another human being. She thought her mind was making this up because of how badly she wanted to have human company. She hesitantly stood up, studying the man in front of her. He looked as if he had been badly injured, and he was using a crutch. She noticed his leg was gone, and then she remembered something she had learned from Luis’ younger sister. If your brain was making up a person, especially in a dream, they were someone you had seen before. Flo was almost positive she had never seen him before, which mad her heart thump just a little bit harder. This was really happening.
“You’re a real person!”
She said rather loudly and enthusiastically.
“Are you all alone? My God.”
She was in utter shock still. She wanted to hug him, but she wasn’t sure that would be appropriate. She still wasn’t 100% sure that he was real. She wasn’t sure that she wouldn’t just hug air, and she wasn’t ready to break the wonderful dream, if it was one after all.
“If you are in fact real, I’m so much better than I thought I was.”
She told him, finally answering his question. She probably seemed like a spaz to him right now, but Flo didn’t care. She wanted to break down and cry. She wanted to give thanks to God for helping her find another human being on this island. She knew he wouldn’t give up on her. She knew that as long as she had faith, all would work out in the end.
