And
Dare to Dance the Tides
Hadley dipped a toe into the clear, ice cold water of the lagoon. Many argued that the water was refreshing considering they lived on a sauna. But Hadley always thought it was too cold. Too cold in the way that the island was too hot and too humid, and the people she was stuck here with were too bossy or too obnoxious. Everything was suddenly too much and at the same time, not enough.
Her short blond hair was pulled back into a small pony tail high on her head, there were clumps of dirt holding the strands together in what almost looked like dread locks - that was the reason for her visit to the lagoon today, she had wanted to wash off quickly before the others were up and moving around. Privacy was something hard to come by here.
She had ditched her ratty T-shirt a week ago and instead walked around in her sports bra and cut off blue jean shorts, which she slid down her legs just before slipping the rest of her body into the cool water. She shivered as the water made it’s way up her torso and past her chest before finally leveling out at her collar bones. The water felt surprisingly good on her sunburnt skin.
She reached to free her hair from the small elastic, but was careful not to lose the rubber band. Her hands moved across her arms and her stomach, rubbing off the dirt that had collected from her time spent in the jungle. She took note of her thinning body appearence. Hadley had never been “skinny.” She was well built, muscular, toned - but a diet of bananas and coconut will have it’s effects on a person.
Her eyes closed and she imagined being back out on the range - she was often alone as her father’s illness worsened, just her and her gelding with a herd of beef cattle; it was her happy place. She took a deep breath in and it was like she could actually smell the field and manure and corn. The bird’s enthusiastic chirping was drawn out by the bellering of cows and the thumping of hooves on the damp colorado soil.
The screech of a monkey in the jungle backdrop pulled her from her memories and a scowl replaced the smile that had momentarily dominated her face. Shut the hell up Hadley growled as she peaked over her shoulder towards the source of the noise. In an attempt to drown out the howling that followed she began to hum to herself, tipping her head back to clean the muck from her hair. She would feel better after she got cleaned up… or at least, she hoped so.
