Zach had been gone for hours, out on his own. Mostly he had spent time at the lagoon because he felt too sick to move. When he finally felt he had rested enough to make it back to the caves, he was quick to do so. He wanted to go back to his liquor hole shared with Lori, but truth be told, he was a little worried about his current state. This felt more than just a flu. The seemed more intense.
The caves were cooler, more air flow, and for once the idea of a crowd seemed comforting. Zach felt that terrible.
When he made it to the old spot, he was surprised to see there were a lot of people there for the time of day. In fact, a lot of people looked as bad off as he did. A few people were sleeping, but others sat around listlessly, wiping sweat from their brows and looking very sickly. Zach wasn't sure if he was relieved or disgusted to know he wasn't the only sick one.
Without saying hello to anyone, he instead slinked to his usual spot, close to where his personal stache had been stored. There, he laid himself out on the cold, hard stone, feeling feverish again. The coolness and darkness of the cave was a temporary relief, but not for long, and soon he found himself urged to sit up and let loose a bit more bile from his empty stomach. Pain made him moan and his vision suddenly went black, bringing terror back to his heart.
"Joey", he squeaked in a voice he didn't recognize. His first thought was get my brother away from here. This wasn't just a flu. He was confident that he was only just beginning to die.

Lori was feeling much better now that the day had progressed. It must have simply been something she ate or maybe the alcohol finally catching up to her. She had gently tucked a bottle of what she assumed would be bourbon once she opened it into her bag that she carried, but for some reason, drinking it just sounded terrible. She usually craved the burn down her throat, but just the sound of it made her want to spew again.
She pushed the flat of her palm against her forehead, wiping away the dirt and grime she felt on her. She needed another dip into the lagoon. She was hot, her body felt gross, and quite frankly, she was extremely irritable. She entered into the caves and immediately stopped. Sure, she had been sick this morning, but the sight that she was now taking it was straight from a zombie apocalypse novel. "The hell..." she muttered under her breath, noting the people that sat around with red eyes, sweat dripping, and moaning in what she assumed was pitiful distaste.
She quickly grabbed the ascot that she had tied around her thigh and tied it around her nose and mouth. She didn't want whatever this was. She scooted past the sleeping bodies, slinking away with a grimace on her pouty lips. "Gross," she mumbled under her breath. Right then, someone who had been stumbling around collapsed near her and emptied his stomach right beside her. Lori jumped away with a squeak, immediately running away from the situation to her and Zach's little nook. Since finding their little hideaway, Lori hadn't minded staying around him while in the caves. She turned the corner, eyes adjusting to the darker area.
"Zach, everyone's getting," she began but was immediately cut off as she came upon the sight of him laying on the cave floor, hands clutched to his stomach and shivering in his fever. "For fuck's sake," she yelled throwing her hands up to the roof of the cave as her eyes fell onto the puddle of bile that laid out before him. "What the hell is going on?" she asked him, grimacing once more as she bent down to Zach's side.
"Joey is fine," she assured him after his outburst. "He is probably at the lagoon. He's been spending a lot of time there," she divulged, frowning in disgust as she grabbed a towel that they had been using to dry off. She had been back to the crash site after a while now, finding more items of use. She covered the vomit, knowing that she was going to make this asshole wash all the clothes after this.

The sound of a familiar voice seemed to bring Zachary out of his haze, and his eyes unglazed as they searched out the source. Lori Glory had arrived, and she seemed angry at him at she picked up a used towel and tossed it over his mess. He was happy to see her, happy to have a familiar pretty face nearby to be with him as he slowly died.
He hoped he was being dramatic, but things were getting foggy real fast. His head throbbed with every blink of an eye, his stomach twisted painfully every few seconds.
Lori was talking about Joey, and it took a moment to register that she was saying he wasn't here and she had also seen him recently. He wondered how Joey was and what Lori thought of the boys mental state. Had she seen the side of him that Zach had witnessed?
"I was just there," he responded, worried. "Maybe I just missed him. If he comes around, tell him to stay away, will you? There must be something going around."
He wanted to shoo Lori away in that moment, too, keep her safe. But he was scared, and Lori didn't exactly like being told what to do. He was relieved to at least see shebhad taken her own precautions and wrapped up her face. Only her glittering eyes were out for the admiring.
He leaned back down on one of his sides, resting for a moment. For just a few seconds, his stomach was easuing up, but he still felt feverish so the cold stone was continuosly comforting.
"I think this is it for me. Thanks for all the good times," he told the woman as he closed his eyes. He was trying to be joking, but maybe it wasn't completely a farce. He felt fear and wasn't sure how to express it without seeming pathetic.

Lori's heart thudded with agitation at his state. Here everyone was getting sick, and the one person that she didn't want to be sick was on his side, complaining of dying. She rolled her eyes, knowing that he wouldn't like that normally, but in this state, he probably didn't have much else to complain about besides his illness. Lori slumped down beside him, leaning up against the cool stone of the cave. They had this little cavern to themselves. Well, themselves and now Joey she supposed. "I'll keep him busy," she said quietly, scooting over and gently placing his head into her lap.
She wasn't sure what was causing her to be this way. To not want to drink the bourbon in her bag, to not leave Zach here crying in his vomit, and to promise to keep Joey away. This was not her. But, without further thought, she began to run her fingers through Zach's curls, gently scratching at his scalp with her long nails as she looked down at his sweating forehead. Lori could stop being a bitch for a little while, especially for Zach.
"Stop being dramatic, Princess," she cooed, brushing away a piece of his hair and circling a finger around his red ringed eyes. "Zach, you look like shit," she whispered, her usual cocky tone replaced with a hint of fear. The echoes around them carried coughs and sounds of vomiting, and it caused Lori to grimace. "Zach, everyone is getting sick, and I don't know what to do. You're sick, I'm getting sick...I'm worried about what this means," she admitted, closing her eyes as she hung her head and continued brushing through his hair with her long fingers.
She looked over at the place where they had lit small fires during the night to stay warm. All that remained were glowing orange embers from earlier, and she desperately wished that the embers would magically ignite into flames. The caves were cold, so cold that she didn't want to think about why these people were so feverish. She swallowed, placing a soft hand on his forehead. She clenched her teeth, feeling the extreme heat coming off of him. "Zach, I'm no doctor, but you're really hot...And not the good kind either," she said, eyes wide as she looked at him. "We need to get you cooled down," she said rather bossily, grabbing at his shirt and jerking it off of him.

Lori had settled down onto the stone next to him, and Zach thought he felt a little calmer by it. His breathing slowed as she rested her head against him, after promising to send Joey away if need be. That was almost enough for him. In this new life, Joey and Lori had become the center of his revolving world. If either one of them died, he wasn't sure what he would be anymore. Joey was his little brother, and Lori was... Lori was... His best friend?
Her fingers found their way to his hair. He loved when she did that, but right now it was mostly a huge and welcomed distraction from his head and stomach pain. It actually helped relieve the headache a bit, too. He kept his eyes closed now and wondered if he could fall asleep and wake up all cured by tomorrow morning. His swirled his tongue around his dry mouth and the room spun.
You look like shit, she told him, but she sounded far away now, and it was a struggle for him to even open his eyes and move his tongue to speak. The cave had grown darker - had he actually fallen asleep into the night? No, not even seconds had passed. But he wasn't all here and his heart felt like it skipped a few beats with his sudden rush of panic.
He felt her hand on his forehead and it grounded him. He clung to the feeling with every sensory he had. He listened to her speak but didn't hear the words. Before he knew it, Lori had halfway undressed him, pulling off his shaggy old shirt. With a late reaction, he chuckled once when he finally registered her joke about his body heat.
"You can't keep y'ur hans' off me," he mumbled with a smile that seemed, well, almost delusional at this point. He was blacking out as his back met the cold rock and his eyes once again closed tight.
He saw Lori, drawing her hand close to slap him. He felt the sting of it on his cheek. In the real world, next to Lori, he flinched as though it had actually happened.
"Sorry!" he told dream Lori, watching her force back tears, and wondering what action was right and what was wrong.
No, not this again. What did I do now? he was saying, but it was just thoughts in his aching head. Zach wasn't all there at this point.

A moment's panic sunk into her bones. She grabbed at his shirt and begun to mop up some of the sweat on him. The cave seemed filled with the sounds of sickness and Lori was not sure what to do. She swallowed hard, and grabbed a water bottle that she had filled from the lagoon. The nerves made her hands shake, and she very quietly lifted some water to his cracked lips. "Zach, drink some of this," she demanded, voice stern but still shaking with fear. Everyone around them was ill. She was ill, but Zach seemed so much worse. They all seemed so much worse than her. What did that mean? For them? For her?
She ran her thumb along his temple, ignoring the joke of being unable to keep her hands off of him. He wasn't being very funny in this situation. But, what scared her more than his flickering eyes beneath their lids, or the sweat pouring out from his skin, was the way he flinched from her as he had the first and only time she had smacked him. She knitted her eyebrows together as his breathing picked up and he apologized to her. What was he seeing?
"Zach, stay with me. I'm right here...It's going to be okay," she said shakily, grabbing his bottom lip and opening it more as she dumped a capful of water into his mouth. She had been a very healthy child, and the only sickness she really dealt with had been a minor cold and then hangovers in her later year. She did not know what to do, and the panic was beginning to set in.
"Zach, you are stronger than this, don't you go anywhere," she said, squeezing his shoulders. Tears began to spring to her eyes and she looked around desperately for anything that would make him better. "Zach, please," she begged, a stray tear falling down her cheek as she watched him fade into the illness. Panicked, she stood up, setting his head on his scrunched up shirt. She ran into the main cavern of the cave, wiping at her face with her arms. "Someone, please, help. It's Zach!" she announced, running to return back to him.

Raion had taken his time to cool off by the beach. About an hour had passed and he decided he was collected enough to socialize again. On the way, he made a water stop at the lagoon and, seeing no one else there, wandered back to the caves. He was going to see if they should be hunting again for more meat since they had eaten every last scrap within hours of landing the monkeys. Near the entrance, he heard somebody hollering for help and caught the name of the person that needed it. A moments panic made him drop his bottle of water and race forward through the cave, and it was during this that he noticed the shape of people around him. There was a distinct smell of sweat in the air. He slowed down for a moment, taking in the sight of the sick. He hadn't been gone that log, but people had made fast progression into an illness that was apparently contagious. He saw Lori scurrying away and figured it was her that bad called for Zach's aid. He followed her. What had Zach gotten into this time? He rounded the corner of rock to find Lori near a dead-looking Zachary. But no, he was alive, struggling to swallow some water and looking as though he was having a bad time. "Did he drink himself to death finally?" Raion asked, looking over to Lori was an expression that was not like him; stubbornly irritated. He immediately regretted being like that. Zach was obviously sick like the people out there. "How long has everyone been sick? I left while most everyone was sleeping and they seemed fine!"

Lori had quickly raced back to Zach, dropping to her knees beside him and brushing his hair away from his face to see the flushed skin. She was panicking now, and really had no idea how to help someone like this. "Raion, help," she whispered, where if close enough, was quite obviously a whimper as she dribbled water over his forehead. She was continuing to do this when she heard him ask if he had drunk himself to death.
Lori's head snapped back to look at him, her eyes immediately narrowing at Raion. She could still see the instant guilt in his face, but she was not about to let that be the only thing he felt. "Seriously? You think this is funny? He's dying Raion," she hissed, standing up and gently putting Zach's head back down on his bundled up shirt. "He may have been drinking the past week, but he doesn't deserve this, especially from you," she growled, stabbing her pointer finger in Raion's chest. "You're supposed to be his friend," she said to him, much quieter this time as she turned back to Zach and crouched beside him, attempting to make him drink more water. That was all she knew how to do at this point.
"Come on, Zach. You can't leave me now. Who's going to help me when I'm getting sick?" she said quietly, watching his eyelids flutter. She sat quietly, feeling her own stomach curl in knots. Raion smelled like fish and salt, and it was nauseating. "Everyone has been falling left and right. I think the past 3 hours have been the worst," she said quietly. "Did you just come from the beach? You smell like seaweed," she muttered, nose curled at the scent.

It wasnt too difficult to swallow water. At least, not when it had been shoved down his throat and he had no choice but to swallow. Still out of touch with reality, poor Zach choked on the water and his mind had him in the ocean, where he was drowning. In his struggle to stay afloat, he gasped for air in the here and now. Then it stopped, and he fell asleep rather suddenly. He wasn't moving now, but his eyes twitched under their eyelids.
Raion didn't need to be told that he was being unbelievable, but leave it to Lori to rail him anyway. He swallowed his regret and tried not to be stung by her venemous words. He was supposed to be his friend. He was! "Sorry, you're right, " he said with a sigh. He watched Lori's body language as she proceeded to mother Zach, in a way that suggested so many things. The two of them had gotten really close. Now that he thought about it, he always seemed to see them come back to the cave together. Someone even said that they'd had some kind of weird argument in the cave a few days ago. When Lori said he was dying, Raion was really scared, too. He left for a brief moment to find some water, and came back with a bottle. " I'm sure he's gonna be okay! Zach is...well, Zach. He's crazy," Raion said to Lori as he unscrewed the cap of a water bottle. "Maybe just keep the fever down for now."With a small, worried frown, Raion grabbed at his shirt and was about to pull it off his back. Then he remember that his shirt was filthy, and probably not good for a sick person. He'd have to just use the water little bits at a time, poor it directly on his forehead. Later, he could get some fresh cold water from the lagoon. So. Raion started pouring the water on Zach. It was then that he remembered there was a lot more sick people out there. - who was helping them? What were they going to do?? "Ok, I'm a little scared. How long has he been sick?"

Lori's fear was keeping into her throat. She couldn't hear Raion as he apologized, she instead just heard Zach's sputtering. She felt tears pinch at her eyes when she noticed that he just all at once stopped and fell into what appeared a deep sleep. A tear fell from her eye, and she brushed it away quickly with the back of her hand. As afraid she was, she couldn't be weak like this. Why the hell was she crying so easily? Sure, Zach was sick, but it was easy getting over sickness, right?
She brushed her face with her palms, watching as Raion ran off for something. She sat back against the cave wall again, slipping beneath Zach's head and cradling him in her lap. She stared at the curls on his head, brushing them back from his forehead while Raion dripped water over his burning scalp. Lori took a moment to look around herself. Here she was, caring for Zach so deeply that she had cried from fear. When was the last time she had cried over a person? She swallowed heavily, looking down at his fluttering eyelids. She brushed her fingers gently over his cheek, a frown permanently etched on her lips.
Her eyes snapped up when Raion said he was afraid. How was she supposed to stay calm if Raion was admitting his fear as well? She furrowed her brows, looked down her nose and Zach and just shook her head, her dark ponytail moving with the shakes. "I don't know. I was sick this morning and had been out all morning," she admitted, continuing to brush Zach's face while she leaned her head back against the rock and closing her eyes. "I don't know what to do, Raion. Everyone is getting sick," she whispered, the weight of the situation pressing down on her shoulders.

This was a new and uncomfortable situation for Raion. Up until now, Zach was the backbone, the one with the gumption to get things done, despite how scary it seemed. Raion realized now how little he'd really done for everybody in comparison to what was needing done right now. He watched Lori with a quiet seriousness as she seemed to cave in to her own fear. Whoops, he hadn't meant to freak her out even worse. What would Zach do? It wasn't like the guy was God and could snap a finger to make things better. Still, he would do something. And here he was, passed out as one of the unlucky ones. Lori mentioned she felt sick earlier, but had it passed from her? Raion went with that, turning his body to face her better. "Maybe it's a good sign that you felt sick. You're obviously better now... Okay, what were your symptoms this morning?"Yes, that was the best bet. Figure out what everyone was sick with, first. Great idea, DR Raion. He rolled his eyes out of frustration, almost forgetting about Lori, just for a moment. "We just need to keep everyone quarantined. All the sick can stay in here, while the rest stay away, on the beach maybe. A few of us will need to take care of everyone, though... Bring them water and food."

Lori sat back and watched the embers from their small fire pit with glassy eyes. She could feel Zach's quiet breathing, and this reassured her for a while that he was okay. He was alive and breathing, which meant that for now that was all she could do. She had saw a few people out of the entrance of the caves, gathering different things to try and make others better, so maybe that would actually work.
She sat quietly before finally answering Raion. "I was having severe nausea with vomiting and eventually dry heaving," she began, brushing back Zach's hair and circling his ear with her hand. It was very absentminded, but she was able to comfort herself while she played with his curls. "I've been having to use the bathroom a lot, but it's mostly just the nausea," she finished, her whispers trailing off into the sounds of the caves.
She nodded, a frown etched onto her lips. "That sounds like a good idea," she muttered, feeling the cold sink into her skin and raise goosebumps. "Do you mind starting up that fire?" she asked, nodding towards the embers that sat off to the side of them. "I've been trying to learn how to do it, but haven't been able to yet," she admitted, the quiet between them stretching on. It was in this moment that she realized that in the month and a half that they had been surviving here, she hadn't even talked to Raion before. There were so many people on this island that she hadn't talked to. She had been so caught up in Zach and their drinking cave that she had lost track of everyone around her. What if Zach died? She would be left here without a friend on the island. What would she do?

Nodding in response, the young man moved over to the firepit and began to work, happy to have something more productive- and familiar- to do. Raion was able to get a fire going rather quickly. He had become quite an expert at it - everyone here had. He was still just grateful that they had real survivors that landed on this island with them, and had taught everyone these basic things. Raion was no boy scout. Not in the before life, anyway. As Raion turned back to the couple, Zach seemed to stir a bit and even opened his eyes for a brief moment, in what seemed a response to the sound of Lori's voice. Raion saw the way Lori petted his hair, twirled it in her fingers, and caressed his face. Raion had missed the intensity of their relationship before all of this. He certainly wasn't naive; his imagination had filled in a lot of holes when he noticed they'd spent a lot of private time together recently. It seemed to be a circulating fact that the two had slept together; at least, they had argued rather openly about it, according to a whispered conversation Raion happened to eavesdrop on. But, still, he'd never seen them actually tender with each other. Something Lori said was echoing in his mind before he even realized it. She mentioned that she was using the bathroom a lot. It was not exactly a symptom of sickness. Didn't you get dehydrated from the flu, or whatever this was? He made a connection then as he remembered his own mother, long ago, always running to the bathroom...when she was expecting his little sister. Could it be? No way. But why not? Not even Raion was sure how long they'd been together. He couldn't even been sure of what they did or when they did it. But Lori was describing some very classic symptoms of pregnancy. And the way she clung to Zach suggested that he'd be the prime candidate for baby daddy. He wasn't sure if the possibility horrified him, or made him relieved. It meant that Lori wasn't sick with this awful stuff going around. Nah, he was thinking too much, surely. But still, he couldn't stop himself from saying something pointed. He scooted in close and leaned in to look at Zach's face. The man had fallen back asleep. But he seemed a lot less pained than a few minutes ago. More peaceful. "I just had a happy memory. You reminded me of my mom when she told me I was going to be a big brother. Always complaining about having to pee. I was really excited to be a big brother but I had no idea why she was always running off to the potty."There, the wasn't too bad. It wasn't accusatory, just light and innocent. He politely kept his eyes on Zach all the while.

Lori had began to watch him make the fire. She had been trying hard to learn basic survival skills, but drinking in their cave and getting lost in each other had caused her to really slack on learning her skills needed to live. Lori's fingers twisted and turned in Zach's hair absentmindedly. For once, she felt like she was actually showing that she cared. This wasn't her. This wasn't what she did, but for some reason, this just felt right. Zach was really all she had on this island, and she needed to remember that.
Her eyes had begun to close as she leaned her head against the rock behind her. The coolness seeped into her, but she could imagine in her mind's eye the heat from the fire that Raion was working on. She had remained quiet until Raion had interrupted that. She turned her face towards him and watched as he relived his memory. At first, she did not mind this story. She had even cracked a smile, thinking about what it would have been like to be told that you were going to be a big sibling. She had always wanted to have a little sister or brother, but now it was a little late to think about that.
But, as the moment stretched on, she thought about what he had said. She reminded him of when her mom was pregnant. She clenched her teeth and looked down at Zach's face. He seemed to be so relaxed, and that contrasted so greatly against what was going on in her head. She reminded him of his mom. When she was pregnant. Lori began to think, began to count backwards for a moment. "Raion, how long have we been on this island?" she asked, turning her face to look up at him with a look of concern. She hadn't been keeping track, hadn't been worried because she had never been worried before. She had been giving the birth control shot, the one that worked for three months. But, it had been nearly ready to get another shot when she had been on the plane.
"Oh my god," she whispered beneath her breath. "Oh my god," she said again, this time much louder than her whisper. This couldn't be happening. This couldn't be real. Her face began to get red as embarrassment and fear crept up into her. "Raion, how long have we been here?" she asked again, this time much more firm in her question, feeling tears prick at her eyes.

Had he gone too far? Raion wasn't sure why he felt compelled to lightly pry. It was very well possible that Lori wasn't pregnant and that, if she was, she already knew of it. Somehow that didn't seem the case. His instincts told him the mood in the air would be different - although, perhaps it could explain Zachary's recent behavior. He was thinking too much. The fire was ablaze now and it was time to do something to help Zach and the others. He seemed ready to get up and get a move on, but when he glanced at Lori's face, he realized he could not go anywhere just yet. Apparently, Lori was having a moment. The look in her eyes was a frightful realization that made Raion's heart skip a beat or two. She asked him the time range since their plight. He took a few moments to think about it in his head. While he did so, Lori gave in to sudden panic before him. She raised her voice and seemed to cave into herself, repeating her question much more aggressively. Raion swallowed nervously, shifted on his feet. Lori could be scary. But no, this look was much more than that. Raion could feel her emotion like he was a sponge. "It's... Close to two months. About six or seven weeks," he responded flatly, his brows creased with concern. Was she going to be okay? Was he right, after all? The secondhand embarrassment didn't stop him from facing the situation. Lori was on the verge of discovering something important and he had a great clue of what that was. He sympathized with her. News like this would probably destroy him, if he were in her shoes. "Lori, it's going to be okay. When Zach wakes up he's gonna take care of you," he instructed her with a much more confident manner. At least this was territory he could try and control, unlike the sickness. "If it's true," he added. After all, there was still time to find out...right? Wait... Would Zach take care of her? Of course he would. Of course he would want to. But the reality is, Raion didn't know Zach well enough yet to determine what his reaction would be. Seeing as how he was already a relatively neurotic kind of guy, it was scary to think what was going to happen with him now. He'd already...been through a lot. Hell, he could even by dying before he ever found out.
