Sure, Zach had seen the dead a few times. His uncle died and it was open casket. He'd passed by a car accident but the person was already draped in white sheets. This, however, was different. The grown man had obviously been projected from the plane during the crash and made it all the way here. Zach just sat there, staring at his broken face, while Nix did some reacting of her own.
He barely seemed to notice what Nix had said. She was reaching a hand out to him - was he supposed to take it? He ignored it, in a kind of dumbstruck way, and once again he felt his fear turning into something he was more comfortable with - anger. He smoldered for a moment as he moved a bit closer to the body. He knew what he wanted to do next, but he was trying to muster up the courage to do it, and that made him angry. He didn't want to be this afraid of a lifeless body. He had seen them in the plane, and he had dealt with them. Now was no different. To give in to fear would mean he'd eventually be too scared to keep surviving.
So, he suddenly shot a hand forward and dug it into a pocket of the dead older man. His own face was pale, and he glanced up at Nix to see how she was. She had turned away and looked as shook up as he felt.
"It's alright," he said quietly, as he rummaged through the clothing of the man. The first pocket was empty, the second had a used tissue hidden inside. Zach pocketed it for a fire starter later. The man was wearing a neon wind breaker that looked straight out of the 80's. It had pockets inside, where Zach found chewing gum and a wad of cash. Satisfied, he took his hand back and moved away from the body, feeling sick to his stomach. "I mean," he started in a shaky voice, "he's not gonna need this now, anyway."
He smiled at Nix, but this time it was forced. He took a moment to stand up on his feet again, brushing dirt off his knees.
"Maybe we should do this with every body we come across," his voice was mostly back to normal now, as though the whole experience hadn't actually disturbed him. It was just what it took to survive; he was convinced of it.

NIX NIGHT Shadow of the Night
It seemed her gesture had been missed, though she waited and watched. She was a hunter before she was anything else, she had been forced to learn it in her time and so she found this a nasty site for the fact it was once a human who had a life and freinds and family but now it wasnt. It was meat, on the ground, a meal for some creature somewhere. She had to think like that, if she didnt, she knew she would have lost her mind a long time ago.
She could see the motions moving over the elder male, her hand flinched and she shivered as the male moved over the body before nix hissed softly. "Get a hold" she muttered softly to herself, "Just meat and bone" she said as zach turned to her. She nodded her head, her mouth pressed in to a thin line. That would become a phrase to live by, they didnt need it any more and the rest of the living did. She nodded her head stiffly, looking up ahead of them and trying to see if anyone else was going to trip them up in their exploring. Possibly quite literally, though hopefully they could make it to water

Zach started walking again, feeling like he wouldn't shake off the uneasy feeling for quite a while. Somehow, he knew it wouldn't be the last time he'd have to do something like that - and certainly not the last dead human to deal with. He clenched his fists and breathed a long sigh through his nose and wondered for the first time if they were really going to live through the next few days. Before the body tripped him up, he was so sure of his own immortality. He'd survived the wreck, so why couldn't he survive the aftermath?
If only it worked that way.
He kept his pace to match with Nix's this time, choosing to walk beside her instead of taking the lead. "I'd say let's forget that happened, but I know that's stupid. As if we will ever forget. It's going to keep happening. Some of the people at the beach may have already died by now," he muttered in a grim tone, his eyes on his feet now. "But hey, we are still alive. And I have a feeling something good is up ahead. I saw a swarm of birds heading in this direction. I'm hoping that's a good sign."
He lifted his head again to survey their path. The jungle was still thick, but the chatter of animals had grown louder. Or, he may have imagined that. The panic may have messed with his senses.
"Thanks for coming with me, Nix."

NIX NIGHT Shadow of the Night
She was walking and not looking back, it was the only way she was going to get through this and the only way to get through being here too. she shivered again, though now noted the elder male had sped up to keep pace with her and she glanced at him. He spoke again, her head nodding at his words though not wanting to offer her own. He was right, she found it odd how she had met someone she agreed with quite so much and how it took the end of a normal life to do it. "Birds are good, animals see and sense what we cant" she said, focusing on the part of the speech where they could move on. She knew animals, she knew patterns, she could work better if she had animals in her and was thinking they were out there to aid them. She ducked down low as she noted a thick patch of leaves before her, shifting below them and then pushing on as they walked to where ever the birds had been. | |
